Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM)

What is it?

A western adaptation of Gua Sha, which is an ancient Chinese practice that involves scraping a massage tool over the skin. IASTM is a skilled intervention that involves using a medical steel instrument to mobilise the soft tissue through repetitive strokes. A cream/emollient is used to help the instrument glide freely.

Some of the most popular IASTM tools include: Graston technique, Rock Blades and FAKTR.

What does it do?

IASTM manipulates the skin, fascia, muscles, and tendons by various direct compressive stroke techniques. This can help reduce pain, tension, break up scar tissue, adhesions and promote healing. Some bruising may appear after treatment, but will dissipate after a few days.
